We have a variety of volunteer tasks to choose from and hopefully something to fit every schedule and interest. After signing up to help out at a race, we will send a very detailed confirmation email 10-14 days before the race that will contain driving directions, details about each shift, where to check-in, and any other pertinent info you might need.
Most shifts take place outside so be sure to pack accordingly for the weather. Aid station and course marshal volunteers should pack a lunch (depending on schedule) and water as they are stationed out on the course.
All volunteers get to eat and drink for free at the finish area, and there are lots of great volunteer perks! Volunteering is a great way to give back, especially if you are also a runner. We highly encourage everyone to volunteer at any trail race as much as they run! Race experiences would be a whole lot different without the amazing volunteers.
Volunteer discount codes will be emailed out to each volunteer the week after the race is completed.
To sign up to volunteer, visit the www.Ultrasignup.com registration page for the race you want to help at and click the Volunteer button. You can also email us at UltraExcuses@gmail.com with any questions or requests.
We cannot put on the races that we do without the help of our awesome volunteers! It is a great way to give back to the running community as well as a way to earn discounts on future Ultra Excuses races, the chances to bypass lotteries, and the opportunity to receive donations to your local organization.
We will be offering raffle prizes to volunteers as well as runners! All volunteers are eligible for random raffle prizes from our sponsors.
Upon completion of a volunteer shift (usually within 7 days of the event), race staff will email you a discount code that can be sued at checkout (when you register) for a future Ultra Excuses race. The code is valid for 1 year from the time of the completed volunteer shift. Codes are not given out until after the volunteer has fulfilled their shift. Volunteer codes may not be used for a race that is already sold out. One free future race entry is the max that can be earned throughout a race weekend.
The discount codes are a thank you gift and ultimately the race directors reserve the right to not give out discount codes if they feel the volunteer has not adequately fulfilled the duties of the shift, left early without prior communication, or violated any of the Ultra Excuses policies. If we choose not to give you a code, we will communicate with you after the race the reasons why.
In order to be eligible for any of the volunteer perks, we encourage you to sign up or email in advance of the race. We have a set number of volunteers needed per shift and once those are full, there will be no volunteer codes given out to extras who show up on race day.
Many of our events also include free shirts or other items for volunteers.
Local organizations (non-profits, school groups, athletic teams, etc.) who are interested in volunteering or staffing an aid station at any of our races can forgo the discount codes in exchange for a donation to their group. Prices and details may vary. Send an email to UltraExcuses@gmail.com if you are interested.
Volunteer shifts usually last about four hours, but more hours will get you more dollars. The pay structure for our volunteer groups is as follows:
1-9: $10 per volunteer
10 – $150
20 – $400
30 – $750
40 – $1200
Please note that if a volunteer group covers an aid station, the aid station has its own value, each volunteer is not counted as one. If your team or group would like to be considered for this fundraising opportunity, please contact UltraExcuses@gmail.com. Groups should register via email and not using the link on Ultrasignup.
